Road to Global Competence: How I'm Doing It
Hi there, this is Onyeka and I’m covering the Creaitz newsletter today😊.
I do not know if “Global Competence” is a real word in the way I think of it.
But I know it drives me every day to want to be better at my skills.
To me, global competence means being able to compete effectively on an international stage, delivering work of equal or superior quality to global peers.
But Who am I And Why Should You Care?
I’m Onyeka Ekwemozor, a Web3 full-stack marketer with over 3 years of experience working with local and global companies.
--- I’ve worked at 7 startups and ran 4 businesses.
--- I've built communities from scratch to over 20,000 members.
--- Worked as a core team member to organize 3 web3/tech events reaching 1,038, 1,700 and 2,000 attendees respectively.
--- Grown website traffic through SEO to over 11,000 impressions and 2,000 visits in 6 months.
--- Developed processes to improve internal marketing activities for multiple organizations.
--- Built my Medium to 400+ organic followers with 3 Google-ranked pieces with zero paid promotions.
--- Trained over 300 people in content marketing and writing.
A lot of times, I had to learn on the job and try out different ideas to grow.
But learning a digital skill is just half the struggle, building global competence is the harder part.
Here's my list of 6 winning ingredients to build global competence.
6 Ingredients For Building Global Competence
BRUTAL EXECUTION
Doing what you ought to do beats waiting for the perfect time, conditions or plan.
Find those things that are:
> Boring or hard
> Have a high impact on your success,
And increase your effort in those things. Global professionals have mastered the art of doing hard things with mastery.
RISK-TAKING
Take calculated risks and don’t doubt yourself.
(While you're there second-guessing yourself, your competitor just posted😏.)
Instead of 'What if I fail?', switch that with 'What if I make a billion dollars?'
This is important because the voices in your head are going to be more damning than the ones from outside.
And your reward is significantly tied to the amount of risk you are willing to take.
VALUE-DRIVEN
Be big on value.
Add value wherever you're involved.
Africans tend to shy away from contributing to the global table.
That culture needs to change and it begins with you.
Always contribute and offer value.
Give before you Get.
PROCESS OPTIMIZING
If you focus on getting one result at the end of the year, you'll get one result.
But if you focus on achieving one result every day, at the end of the year you'll have 365 results.
That's how processes impact your work.
Optimizing every part of your work is how you increase your results.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Don't ignore the local scene.
Earning in dollars doesn't mean you should neglect the motherland🙃.
Why?
Because when people buy your services, they are not just buying your coding or marketing skills, they are buying your credibility, your network, and your influence.
All these can largely be verified through local participation.
So, get involved in local conversations.
THINK GLOBAL
Think global standards.
From developing countries, it's already NOT a levelled competing ground with digital talents in the West.
Power supply and connectivity issues are the most common challenges.
So, remove those obstacles, learn to meet global standards for your service and keep improving yourself.
